When a spouse strays can the marriage be saved? That’s the question
that Tessa ends up facing. The chapters go back and forth between Tessa
the wife and Valarie the other woman. Tessa’s chapters are told in the
first person and Val’s in the third but the story flows well from voice
to voice.
This was a hard book to read but in a good way, it was a hard book
emotionally. Most stories where there is infidelity you are set up to
dislike at least one of the characters making there a clear
villain/victim setup. However in Heart of the Matter that is not the case. All 3 main players are characters you can like at least somewhat if not out right love.
The underlying story of Valerie and her son didn’t feel like an after
thought or an ill contrived plot mover. And the sub-plot felt natural
and added to the overall message of the story.
